Vermeer painted a wealth of subjects during his lifetime most of them included portraits and indeed many were a moral warning against the sins of the flesh.
This work is one of the few religious subjects that he tackled, as can be seen this is one of his early works as the drapery isnt quite so well defined as in his later paintings. But what does come through is the play of light and shade that was to dominate his paintings throughout his life.
