Mr and Mrs William Hallett...
Thomas Gainsborough

Probably one of the best of the images Gainsborough ever painted, its a marriage portrait and follows the custom of the day by painting the couple in formal pose. Painted at the height of his powers it is a complete contrast to the painting of Mr and Mrs Andrews the pose is far more intimate despite its formality. The brushwork is far more assured and Gainsborough has painted his subject with loving detail and precise strokes. The couple walk along arm in arm and give a far more harmonius look to the viewers eye. The dog is depicted as precisely as the couple. The whole gives a spontaneity to the work, very much unlike the stilted portrait of mr and Mrs Andrews painted 35 years earlier.
