when I first saw this painting I thought that Friedrich was painting himself injured but when you look at the title, you can clearly see that is not so, the headgear is a cap and eye sighting shield.
One of Friedrichs earliest works, you can see the promise of a future master artist, though he is experimanting with line and wash you can see the technical detail in the jacket that he is wearing, a grenade is clearly picked out using a minimum of lines.
