moving on 8 years from the first self portrait we can now see that Friedrich has gained in experience and is becoming a fine technical draughtsman.
This self portrait is more more detailed than, for example, self portrait with cap and eyesight, there the emphasis was on washes. Whereas with the portrait above there is much more confidence in recording line to give texture and detail to the picture.
