Here can been seen two influences over Campin in the way he has tackled this subject. Going back to the Byzantium period where the background was painted gold and yet the figures are painted in the renaissance style with great attention to detail, espeacilly on the headdress of Mary. Whereas, for example Mary painted by Duccio is painted with bare detail, the clothing has the barest suggestion of shading. Campin has painted his figures as they may have been in life. He hasnt yet quite obtained the realism of, for example, Van Eyck who was painting at the same time.
